Entrance Music: http://safeYouTube.net/w/XWyf

Today is Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

The music you heard was singer Lyla June. She is Navajo and Cheyenne.

November is Native American Heritage Month.

This Week’s theme is:   FUN AND EXCITEMENT
Let’s take a look at a fun and exciting
cultural event for Native Americans: the pow-wow.
Traditionally the pow-wow was a coming together
for trade and celebration.
There are dancing contests, a grand entry of all the dancers,
and usually vendors selling food and other items.
Some dances are sponsored in honor of certain people.

Every tribe has its own language,
and Native American tribes are
As different as different European countries.
The Crow are called “Absaalooke” in their own language.
This translates to “Children of the large-beaked bird.”
European settlers didn’t quite understand this,
so they named it something familiar to them, “Crow.”

A way to honor and respect native peoples
is to call them what they call themselves.
Next time you meet a Crow Native American, refer to
Them as “Absaalooke” and they will be deeply honored!
You can also learn to say “Thank you” in Absaalooke: “Aho!”
