It's Women's History Month. Did you know that this year marks the one hundredth anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in Montana- a full eight years before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?

Montana granted women a limited right to vote in school elections in 1889, and followed suit with full suffrage for women in 1914. By 1916, Jeanette Rankin, a former schoolteacher (originally from Missoula) and an activist in the women's suffrage movement,  was elected as Montana's sole Representative, and the first woman in Congress. A strong pacifist, she was one of a number of Representatives to vote against the U.S. entering World War I. She again made history in 1941, some would say notoriously, as the only Senator voting against going to war against Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
