Tidbit Tuesday
DidYouKnowAlgebra
Around 825 A.D. in Baghdad, Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizimi wrote a book called “Kitab al-jabr wa al-muqabalah”, which means “The science of restoration and reduction” and stood as the major algebraic work of the period. The word “algebra” comes from this title (“al-jabr”), since this was the first textbook used in Europe for this subject. The word “algorithm” is a distortion of al-Khwarizmi’s name.

Don’t know what to get that special someone for Valentine’s Day? What about a cake pop!? The Sophomores are selling them this week, deadline to order is next Tuesday. Delivery date: 2/11

Cake pops will also include a personalized message!

Cake pops are actually very fitting for this celebration, more so than flowers or candy. I bet you are wondering why, well I’ll tell you!

Valentinus, a bishop in central Italy, was talking to Judge Asterius about religion, and Asterius had an adopted daughter who was blind, so he challenged Valentinus. He was like, “ Hey, if you heal my daughter, I will do anything you want.” So Valentinus put his hands over her eyes and...she could see! Crazy! So Valentinus said all the idols had to be destroyed, Christians had to be freed, and the judge had to be baptized. Asterius was ok with that. But Valentinus pushed it even farther and started marrying Christian couples in secret and spreading Christianity outside of Umbria (where he was living) and the judge wasn’t having it. So Valentinus was beheaded and his head was put on a stick.
There you go. Cake pop (cake on stick). Valentine (head on stick). Bottom line, don’t mess with Asterius. He’ll cut off your head.
