Above are the famous Greensboro Four in statue form on February 1st, 1960 and also below, those same Civil Rights pioneers today. North Carolina A&T freshmen, Ezell Blair, Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil & David Richmond walked downtown and “sat - in” at the whites–only lunch counter at Woolworth's. They refused to leave when denied service and stayed until the store closed. This act of nonviolent defiance started a series of lunch counter protests in other places in the south and midwest.
Integration “read-ins” occurred at libraries, “swim-ins” at beaches and public pools, and other “sit-ins” in parks and museums proved to be effective strategies. In the end, after a lot of people weighed in, economic loss by businesses and increasingly vocal public opinion proved to be the tipping points for integration. Over 70,000 black and white demonstrators risked their own safety and participated in the “sit-in” movement. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 effectively abolished segregation in the U.S.

Here’s a look at a new interactive museum display which helps visitors get a feel for what it was like for the Greensboro Four. The four were college freshmen at the time of their protest; just about the same age as some of you.
