THIS WEEK’S THEME IS:
HEROES

Mr. Arvish got to interview this hero of his, drummer Ralph Peterson, on Wednesday night.
Peterson grew up in New Jersey, playing drums as did his father and grandfather,
but also played trumpet in the marching band. He went to Rutgers, initially admitted for the trumpet,
(because he couldn’t pass the percussion audition). He later changed to drums.
While still in college, he started playing with Jazz pianist Walter Davis, jr,
Partly as a result, he ended up playing second drum to one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time,
Art Blakey, in his two-drum Jazz Messengers Big Band.
Ralph has appeared on more than 150 records, and just put out his 23rd album as a leader.
He has toured around the world, and mentored many students in his 17 years teaching at Berklee school of music,
including a number of up-and-coming jazz artists- even appearing on some of their albums.
Now, let Mr. Arvish tell you the rest of the story!
