THE HAUNTED HALLWAY
Written by Anonymous

“What is this???” cried Joe as his head hit the floor a second time. He was out cold.
While Joe was unconscious he entered into a strange, misty dream where he and Terry were hitchhiking along a lonely highway. In place of a yellow line the road had a checkerboard pattern. Breeze whooshed audibly as tumbleweeds rolled across the desert landscape. Several vehicles raced by, including a large yellow school bus chock-full of what appeared to be zombie children whose faces and hands were pressed against the bus windows. They ogled the walkers hungrily. A few of the undead were hurling small soft objects out the tops of open windows. There was a faint smell of decay as the two pedestrians approached tiny oblong things which had rolled to a stop in the weedy grass. The hitchhikers could hear the bus driver yelling at his passengers.
“I SAID keep your fingers and toes INSIDE the bus!!”    The vehicle veered drunkenly down the road and the pair had no other option but to continue walking. Presently they heard a car approach. Terry looked up hopefully, but her expression changed as she saw the occupants through the murky windshield.
“Don’t take this ride!” warned Terry as a brown Chevy Malibu seemed to glide in slow motion towards them. Something was flapping on the old-fashioned door handle of the car. Was it...an arm?
The disembodied limb held fast to the automobile with a single hook where a hand used to be. It flopped awkwardly with the motion of the car. The driver of the vehicle was dressed as a mild-mannered park ranger who somehow resembled their maniacal math teacher! His fellow passenger looked like their social studies teacher, except he had doubled in size and had skin the color of guacamole.
“You.” he mouthed silently as he aimed two gnarled green fingers at his eyes and then pointed one index finger at the teenagers. He rested his arm on the open passenger side window of the Chevy as that same  finger malevolently curled into a green hook shape. They could hear eerie music coming from inside the car. Terry suddenly stopped up her ears, her face a mixture of tragedy, fear and something like agony.
“What is it?” cried Joe, helplessly.

“It’s JAZZ!” screamed Terry in reply. Both of them clutched their ears as the music echoed down the lonely stretch of highway.
