THE HAUNTED HALLWAY
Written by Anonymous

“It’s JAZZ!” screamed Terry in reply. Both of them clutched their ears as the music echoed down the lonely stretch of highway.
The midnight blue ATV was upon them almost immediately. A young blonde woman steered her vehicle with one, leather-clad arm and held a pitch fork in the other. She wore a farm jacket and the youngsters relaxed as she approached them by the side of the road with a kindly expression, engine idling.
“Let me guess!” said Terry, “Are you an angry villager?”
The young woman laughed jovially, “I passed the angry villagers a ways back in an old green truck. They seemed pretty busy!  Instead of torches and shovels, they had phones, adding machines, keyboards, oh, and mops and brooms! I think I also saw some ladles, spatulas and large metal pots! One guy stuck out--a one-armed pirate. I think he was trying to load a cannon. Old Franken-jazz had better watch out!”
Just then, they heard the cry of a raptor bird. The ATV driver quickly set aside her pitchfork and held up her gloved arm so the dark falcon could land. The two appeared to be having a brief conversation. Terry and Joe exchanged an amazed look.
“Um, do you speak falcon?” asked Joe, incredulously.
“Well, only a bit” she replied, “This bird wants to know what time it is. She says she’s in charge of some extremely peculiar children and she needs to find them soon!” The two students had never before seen a raptor that closely and they were astonished to discover that it had glamorous eyelashes. The bird called out once more and took flight as the teenager’s eyes followed her skyward journey. Clouds scudded across an oily blue sky. They had been dimly aware, during their sojourn, of walking past telephone poles, but for the first time the pair registered that the tall poles were in fact, supporting a moving chairlift. They looked once more for the ATV operator, but she was gone.
“Is that our old 5th grade teacher?” asked Terry, pointing overhead. The airborne woman gestured at them with a sharp, gleaming ski pole.
“I think so!” Joe answered, craning his neck, “And there’s the Superintendent... and the Resource guy! It says “ultralight” on the bottom of his board. That’s him, alright. His staff of paras is up there, too, tossing basketballs to each other from chair to chair.”
“Maybe those are pumpkins!” Remarked Terry, peering upward and trying to avoid any plummeting orange spheres. The group appeared alien in their ski goggles and puffy winter coats. Skis clacked together as boards sloughed snow. Terry felt the icy crystals fall on her head and shivered.

Just then the travelers were interrupted by a loud chorus of engines revving. It appeared that a diabolical motorcycle club approached the frightened teenagers. The lead rider wore a fringed black leather coat and matching chaps. He sat astride a menacingly powerful machine, the word, “P-pal” emblazoned on his dark helmet. As he passed, the students could see a pirate flag insignia on the back of his jacket. His identically-costumed gang roared past and the teens could make out the letters and numbers on their helmets respectively. “K, 1, 2, 3, 4”, and somewhat mysteriously, “Title”. There were not one, but two motorcycles with side cars. The riders’ helmets marked by a cryptic, “YEP”. They showered the pedestrians in a flurry of what looked like math and spelling worksheets.
As Terry paused to pick one up, she heard a bicycle bell. She was surprised to see the other resource teacher leading a brigade of witches on a fleet of old-fashioned bicycles. There were paras, and therapists, all decked out in capes and pointy hats. A few had whisk brooms attached to the rear of their spooky rigs. Their school counselor was moving fast, keeping up with the pack on roller skates, her hair flying behind her. Some cackled at Terry and Joe, “Look at those delicious children!” They threw their heads back and shrieked with laughter, “Eh heh heh heh!” They rang and rang and rang their bicycle bells until the sound seemed to resemble a school bell. The witches’ screaming and laughing echoed down the lonely stretch of roadway, which suddenly came into focus as the familiar hallway of their high school.
“Come on, you two.” said an encouraging female voice. “Since your junior first responders course is canceled, I’d like to see if you can help me out in the computer lab.”
Joe and Terry collected themselves and their scattered schoolbooks off of the blue and white-checkered floor tiles.
“We’re starting a Photoshop assignment and I need some help with the tools that enhance reality.” said the teacher.
Terry answered for both of them. “Something tells me Joe here would be really good at that!” Joe smiled weakly as he rubbed the lump that had formed on the back of his head. He followed his friend towards the welcoming rectangle of light at the end of the dark hallway.
