IHS is short for “Interagency Hot Shot”
Those agencies are:
United States Forest Service, National Park Service,
Bureau of Indian Affairs
,
Bureau of Land Management
, as well as state, county, and city governments.
Hotshot Crews can be assigned to any jurisdiction
in order to help a community in need.
When they are not out on a fire, Hotshots are located in their home district
doing trail maintenance, control burns, thinning fuels,
monitoring and mopping up old fires, as well as responding
to search and rescue calls and disaster relief work.
Here are the men and women of your
local IHS  Crew at Lolo National Forest.
Sadly, while stationed to the 2017 Strawberry fire near Baker, Nevada, they lost a crew member when a tree fell on first year Lolo Hotshot, Justin Beebe. His injuries were so severe that he was unable to recover.

Hotshots are crews of 20 elite wildland firefighters sent into the hottest parts of a wildfire in order to manually suppress or re-direct out of control fires. Firefighting used to be organized “as needed” and at one time Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crews were assigned to fight fires during the 1930’s. The first official Hotshot Crew was housed at a former CCC camp based out of two forests in Southern California in 1946.
A tip of the hat to Justin.

KEEP MONTANA GREEN!
Here is an update on our orphan black bear cub,
“Boo Boo”.
“Boo Boo” was sent to the Snowden Wildlife Sanctuary to recuperate and fatten up for 9 months. He was able to play amongst ten other black bear cubs and had his own Facebook Page due to his unexpected national fame. Although it isn’t really scientific to name wild animals, his citizen rescuer gave him that nickname. He was successfully returned to the wild on four healthy paws.
